Introduction:
Monsurat Ajoke Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated
to promoting girls’ rights and protecting them from harm, intervened in the case
of a 12-year-old girl (AlimahGambo) who was falsely forced into early marriage.
Despite her refusal, her mother subjected her to physical and emotional abuse. This
report highlights the foundation’s efforts in seeking justice for the girl and ensuring
her safety.
Background:
On the 4th of January 2021, our foundation received
a distress call from a concerned neighbour about a 12-year-old girl who was being
forced into marriage by her mother. The girl had refused the marriage, citing her
desire to continue her education. However, her mother persisted, subjecting her
to physical and emotional abuse, including pouring hot water on her.
Intervention:
Upon receiving the report, our team immediately swung into action:
1. Rescue Mission: We collaborated with local authorities to
rescue the girl from her mother’s custody.
2. Medical Attention: We provided the girl with medical attention
to treat the injuries she sustained from the abuse.
3. Counselling: Our team of counsellors provided the girl with
psychological support to help her cope with the trauma.
4. Legal Action: We worked with local law enforcement to ensure
that the mother was held accountable for her actions.
Outcome:
Thanks to our intervention, the girl was rescued from the abusive
situation and is now safe under our care. We have also:
1. Obtained Custody: Our foundation has obtained temporary custody
of the girl, ensuring her safety and well-being.
2. Enrolled in School: We have enrolled the girl in school, allowing
her to continue her education.
3. Providing On-going Support: Our team continues to provide
the girl with on-going support, including counselling and medical care.
Conclusion:
Monsurat Ajoke Foundation is committed to protecting girls from
harm and promoting their rights. This case highlights the importance of our work
and the impact we can have on the lives of vulnerable girls. We will continue to advocate for the rights of
girls and ensure that they receive the support and protection they deserve.
